Summary description of agroecological practice

On our 1/4 acre organic food garden we grow a wide range of vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and other plants for our own consumption and to sell to the local community. We specifically want to introduce low income rural black communities to concept of "Eating Organic Food" which most everyone remembers as a child growing up in rural SA. But we have lost that recently. Our task is to bring it back into the mainstream of rural community identity. And we start starting in our back yard then moving out into the skeem (informal settlement).
We do everything organically and are members of the local PGS Swellendam. We also actively participate in strengthening the social movement in our area.

Type of agroecological practice

I draw on a wide range of ideas, teachings, concepts and practices from within the Agro-Ecology framework. This includes the use & or production of biodynamic preparations for compost and fields, Microbial teas & ferments from KNF & Jadam schools of thought.

Implementing the practice

Taking the perspective of the peasant farmer, I prefer to produce my own natural inputs for the improvement of soil structure & microbial life. This means making compost, worm team, compost tea, comfrey & other weeds fermented in water as well as many other liquid soil enhances.
Partnering with nature manifest in a wide range of activities & timing. Working with natural cycles like the moon, helps us develop circular patterns that repeat, giving us many opportunities to synchronise to the natural rhythm.

Why you use and what you expect from this practice?

I expect this practice to the following effects:
1: Inspire & motivate other people to grow some of their food
2: Improve the heath & well being from a physical & psychological perspective for everyone who experience the garden or its produce
3: Improve the quality of the soil
4: Bring me closer to my community

Details

Our intention is that all activities aim for a zero carbon footprint helping us to reduce the environmental cost of food production & community development.
Our first principle is "Do no harm". So chemical & synthetic substances in agriculture are not considered viable ever.
