Where it is realized
Summary description of agroecological practice
As an Agroecology training institution and farm, we use sustainable practices and create a cycling system in our practices. We train different stakeholders on different practices across Ghana, grow crops and raise broilers and layers without vaccination, Pharmaceutical drugs, growth hormones and antibiotics. Raise them through different herbal formulations from herbs, spices and fruits.
Type of agroecological practice
Soil health, multipurpose organic food production and processing, Natural Poultry Production etc
Implementing the practice
Grow some of the fruits, herbs and spices and buy others. We carefully study each item's elements and nutritional values and what they can cure in poultry. We analyse the chemical reactions that may occur. We devise different formulas and try them on a small scale before acknowledging which works better for a particular treatment or prevention. The core process is through fermentation.
We return the waste from the poultry to grow food through composting and raise insects for the animals through their waste and the food waste from the farm. We prepare a lot of bio ingredients and work with nature to support our practices.
Why you use and what you expect from this practice?
We have a system that one unit relies on another thereby reducing our cost of production, producing healthy crops with long shelve life.Limit transfer of residues of antibiotics from chicken to human which is making people build resistance to antibiotic drugs
Land size
Substitution of less ecological alternative
Details
We follow the same laid out pattern of treatment for the broilers but instead of vaccination or drugs, we use our formulated herbal medicines to prevent and treat. The animals also have access to range in a controlled environment. We develop methods to reduce the purchase of external natural inputs we cannot produce by ourselves except essential inputs
